Question and Answer

I have a question about the Seminarian Education Thanksgiving Appeal?

I thought that Catholic Family Sharing Appeal (CFSA) already covered Seminarian Education?

CFSA does contribute a portion of seminarian education funding. Last year, 12% of the diocesan expenditures related to Seminarian and Priest Education were covered by CFSA.

In addition, The Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota has assisted in meeting the expenses of seminarian education through endowments that have been established solely for the use of Seminarian Education along with individual gifts. The Catholic Foundation also conducts several events such as the Bishop Charity Fishing Tournaments at Big Stone Lake and Lake Oahe which has added to the funding to cover our seminarian education cost.

What was Seminarian Education in 1996 vs. 2007?
The average cost to educate and form a seminarian has grown from approximately $18,000 in 1996 to an average of $28,000 today.

Why now? Did we have an increase this year greater than others?

No, as noted above, the need for additional funding over and above CFSA has always existed. The last time that the diocese requested additional funding diocesan wide was 1998. Since that time through the generosity of individuals and funds from the Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota the education expenses were met.

During the "Share! First to the Lord" donations had been used to meet these expenses. These funds are no longer available to meet the needs of the seminarian education.

Why not roll these seminarian education expenses into CFSA?

Rolling the seminarian education expenses into CFSA would require a significant increase in the annual appeal along with the regular increase for existing programs. Carrying out the appeal out this allows those most interested to participate in helping meet the seminarian education need.

What does the diocese pay for and what does it consider seminarian education?

Our education policies are similar to those of other dioceses in our region.

The first 4 years of Seminarian education is the minor seminary and the final four years of education is the Major Seminary.

During the first 4 year period the diocese aids in half of the education expenses for those men considering the vocation to priesthood.

When candidates enter the final 4 years of theology the expenses for their education and formation are covered completely by the diocese.

Are seminaries closer to Sioux Falls less expensive?
At this time seminarian expenses are even across the country. The St. John Vianney Seminary in St. Paul, MN has been our primary minor and pre- theology seminary for several years.

Is this appeal to be yearly?
This is the second year of the Seminarian Education Thanksgiving Appeal and there are many factors involved, like the number of seminarians, the number of other gifts and the growth of endowments. The Bishop along with the Priest Council will review the situation on an annual basis and recommend the direction of the appeal.

What can be done to help seminarian education in the long term?

Through the encouragement of planned giving the parish and diocese will be able to ensure the long time security of ministries and charities important to the giver.

By creating an endowment, a permanent fund is established to provide a source of continuous financial support. The principal remains intact and continues to grow, while earnings support Catholic entities in perpetuity.
